I joined Race At Your Pace in January 2019 when I started cycling to improve my cardiovascular health. I am disabled, pushing 60 and walking is difficult for me. Both my competition horses were off with injuries so I needed a focus.
That first month I signed up for 50 miles, and it seemed like a mammoth undertaking given that my legs shook after 3 miles! I exceeded my goal. So the next month I signed on for 100, and on it went.
My first big goal was the Fat Lad at the Back 25 mile sportive in Ilkley. It was tough for a newbie but so rewarding to get a completion. My goals kept increasing.
It was a big jump from a 200 mile a month challenge to 300 miles a month, but there have been months when I have achieved it. I love the fact that when life gets in the way of your goals you can scale your commitment down to suit.
Having been seriously ill in bed for over 6 weeks this summer with respiratory issues we now believe to be Covid, I missed one month entirely and achieved only 25 miles the next month. I am fired up to regain my fitness form and health and with the shiny inducement of a monthly medal and a goal of exceeding last year’s mileage total, all I can say is‚ watch my wheels, I am spinning towards winning!
