“As a key worker I have been even busier during ‘lockdown’ but knowing I have a target to achieve has given me momentum to get out for my runs no matter how tired I may be and I know I will feel so much better after…”

My running journey started mid-October 2019 at the age of 46, having been on my own for 7 years after my marriage broke down. I was looking for something to do to socialise once more. I joined a female community running group and that started giving me Facebook adverts for running related things, one of which was Race At Your Pace.

I signed up for the December 2019 challenge with a target of 25 miles. Having something to work for helped to keep me running in those dark, dreary, cold, wet days.

Part the way through the month, my daughter, after seeing how the challenge was keeping me motivated and the remarked difference in my mood after returning from a run, offered to buy me the annual pass for Christmas.

7 months down and 5 to go and from the first tentative steps of thinking 25 miles was unachievable, last month I ran 75 miles!

I originally started running to connect with people again and that has been achieved but I had no idea at the time the difference it would make to my mental health and my weight loss.

Having the challenges and a target to work towards has kept me motivated. As a key worker I have been even busier during ‘lockdown’ but knowing I have a target to achieve, has given me momentum to get out for my runs no matter how tired I may be and I know I will feel so much better after, not just from the run but from that time away from all the stresses.

Since starting the challenges, I have lost 20lbs and 3% body fat, I am fitter and healthier both in mind and body and can honestly say signing up for Race At Your Pace is the best thing I have ever done.
